Our Healthy School

Healthy Eating

We believe that pupils thrive in a school where they get the best possible food and exercise. Healthy eating is important to us and we have been awarded the HealthyLiving award for the work done by our chef and his team.

Our school bistro, run by Peter our chef, is a very popular place!  The pupils were involved in developing our menus and over 90% now enjoy Peter's meals.

Donaldson's is part of the Hungry for Success scheme. Hungry for Success is a national initiative aimed at encouraging healthy eating and improving nutrition for children and young people at school.

By achieving a Healthy Living Award we are committed to providing a wide range of healthy, freshly prepared food.  We never use any processed food, chemicals or additives and we use fresh, locally sourced ingredients often organic or fair-trade.

Donaldson's also believes in offering our pupils choice, we involving them in the creation of menus and take trips to local farms and produce markets to help them understand where their food comes from.  We use clear daily menus including photographs, so children can choose their meals each day and have a 'Try-It' badge system to encourage the tasting of new foods.  We also involve some of the younger pupils in cooking some of the dishes and our secondary pupils have work experience opportunities within our school bistro.

Our main school menu changes twice per year and within each menu we have a four weekly rotation of different dishes.  We also introduce different themed and seasonal meals throughout each term and always cater for any special diets.

Healthy Lifestyle

To ensure that our pupils also lead an active life whilst at Donaldson's we have included a wide range of fitness facilities within the campus including:

"I believe in reducing the amount of salt and fat in food, especially the food we serve to our children. However, I am personally against putting food into good and bad camps, I believe a little of everything in moderation is good for children. Children should be taught how to make informed choices abut the food they eat."
