Our referral process starts with an initial referral enquiry from a local authority Social Worker, Educational Psychologist or a Health Professional. Enquiries are also welcome from parents and carers.
The initial enquiry is followed up with an informal visit to Donaldson’s School. The visit will usually include parents, the Social Worker, Educational Psychologist and sometimes the child/ young person. Informal visits to view the school are encouraged, as they allow the child/ young person and family members to get to know our facilities and staff in a way that best suit individual needs. Full information on the services on offer is made available during these visits and any questions answered.
If it is agreed that the school may meet the needs of the young person, a referral form is sent to the relevant professional who will then complete and submit with any supporting documents.
On receipt of the completed referral form, a period of assessment will commence during which key members of the Donaldson’s team will liaise closely with the family and local authority to consider whether the school will be able to meet the child/ young person’s needs. This may involve visits by the team to the child/ young person’s current school or home, enabling staff to meet with the child/ young person in his/ her current environment and to meet with other people involved in the young person’s life.
On conclusion of the team’s referral assessment process, the Head Teacher will contact the referrer with a final decision about whether a placement can be offered.
