Top award for healthy eating

The catering team at Donaldson's School is celebrating the achievement of national accreditation by being presented with the prestigious healthyliving award plus.

The healthyliving award plus aims to make it easier for consumers to eat healthily, with caterers having to meet a set of key criteria to ensure they are providing and supporting healthier eating.  The plus award is a higher level of award which recognises an organisational commitment to provide and support healthy eating.

Peter Anderson, Donaldson's School catering manager, and his team have worked hard to achieve the award. Peter explained: "Healthy eating is part of the culture of the school and underpins everything we do, from sourcing fresh food locally to involving the pupils in the science of food as part of the curriculum.  Everyone on the team is proud of the initiatives we have put in place and the real difference we have seen in eating habits by putting health at the top of the agenda. Now the vast majority of our students, around 90 per cent, are eating in house and making their own informed choices to eat tasty, healthy meals."

Donaldson's School in Linlithgow is the only school with its own in-house catering team to be presented with the healthy living award plus at a ceremony at the Scottish Police College, Kincardine on 3rd October, hosted by well-known broadcaster and journalist Stephen Jardine. Stephen commented: "It was an absolute pleasure to present the 2011 healthyliving awards and to meet the people who are working on the frontline to make Scotland a healthier, happier country."

Scottish Government Minister for Public Health, Michael Matheson said:  "The healthyliving  award lies at the heart of our route map to prevent overweight and obesity, providing us with tasty, quality foods that help us take those small but important steps to a healthier diet. We're committed to doing everything we can to improve the health of all Scots. Eating a healthy diet and, particularly, introducing children to healthy eating is one way we can do this and I congratulate all of those recognised here today."

Healthyliving award Project Manager, Claire Brown, who presented awards at the event, said: "The businesses and organisations here today should be proud of achieving this  national accreditation. Everyone has worked hard to achieve the high standards of the award and are leading the way amongst the catering trade; proving that catering teams of all sizes can satisfy demand for healthier food choices, and be rewarded for their efforts."

Donaldson's is Scotland's national school for children who are deaf or have communication difficulties and is one of the Scottish Government's grant assisted schools.

"Healthy eating is part of the culture of the school and underpins everything we do..."
