Donaldson's is Scotland's national school for pupils who are deaf or have communication difficulties.
Donaldson's School has secured almost £20,000 from the most recent Children in Need BBC telethon. The money will fund a state of the art sensory sound and light system in the school swimming pool.
As many of the pupils at Donaldson's are on the autistic spectrum, the sound and light system offers them a calming and relaxing environment, which can have a very positive effect on their behaviour. The highly interactive system will allow pupils and staff to create their own light and/or music sequences as well as using the system for communication through play, numeracy, colour identification and, of course, to encourage physical activity.
Principal, Janice MacNeill comments: "Since moving to our purpose-built school we have seen great benefit in sensory installations that can help calm and distract pupils who are distressed or experiencing difficulty accessing learning and teaching. This installation will be of considerable benefit in helping some of Scotland's most disadvantaged children and we are thrilled to have been supported by the BBC in this way."
