Donaldson's new campus in Linlithgow recently opened in January 2008 and is undoubtedly the newest and most modern environment designed specifically to educate and care for children who are deaf* or have severe speech and language in the UK.
The campus is situated on the edge of Linlithgow in a quiet residential area which offers our staff and pupils a very peaceful environment but with easy access to the town centre. Located high up towards the Bathgate hills the school offers views right across the Forth Valley taking in the Ochil Hills, Muiravonside Viaduct, Grangemouth refinery and on a clear day you can even see as far as Stirling Castle and Wallace Monument.
This aerial photograph illustrates the full scale of the campus including the extensive woodland and recreational space. Shared teaching, sports, dining and administrative facilities form a central hub linking the two teaching wings – the nursery/primary and secondary schools. Both schools are grouped around individual play spaces with links and views to the landscape.
Facilities include a gym, swimming pool, fitness room, dining room, library, and assembly hall as well as a Life Skills room and Art studio. Classrooms, each of which accommodates six pupils, feature state-of-the-art Soundfield systems and interactive whiteboards. Overall, the grouping of the buildings is intended to from a progression from loud to quiet; public to private.
Residential accommodation is deliberately placed in a separate building at the edge of the site to reinforce the separation of home and school and allow a much more domestic scale and feel. The residence building incorporates 24 bedrooms split into three discreet units. Every bedroom has its own en-suite facilities and each unit has its own kitchen, dining and living space to provide a sense of community and family.
Throughout the site, trees frame an open outlook with attractive long views across the countryside towards Beecraigs Country Park. The grounds include an all weather sports pitch, a cycle track, barbeque and picnic areas, play areas, 2 outdoor classrooms, a wild garden and a sensory garden.
