Donaldson's is Scotland's national school for pupils who are deaf or have communication difficulties.
At Donaldson's we have a progressive programme to ensure that all of our teachers have access to Teacher of the Deaf training. This ensures that our teachers know how deaf children learn and so that they can differentiate the learning and teaching to make it accessible to pupils.
Individuals wishing to become teachers of the deaf must be qualified and experienced teachers. These teachers can then undertake a Diploma course for teaching deaf children. Once trained, the teacher of the deaf should have:
Teachers of the Deaf also have an understanding of the great importance of improving literacy skills and therefore have a large concentration on teaching reading.
Donaldson's has always been very proactive with the British Association of Teachers of the Deaf and is regularly involved in programmes at The Moray House School of Education at The University of Edinburgh.
