Donaldson’s is Scotland’s national residential and day school providing education and care for pupils aged 2.5 to 19 years who are deaf* or have severe speech and language difficulties. We are a Grant Aided Special School supported by the Scottish Government. Local authorities refer pupils and fund placements.

Our ethos is to:

  • Provide a happy, friendly, caring environment, where children feel safe, secure and valued
  • Provide our pupils with the best possible access to the whole curriculum
  • Provide an equal opportunity for all
  • Provide an atmosphere that promotes learning and praises achievement, allowing children build up their confidence and self esteem
  • Work for the inclusion of pupils across Scotland and the North of England in all aspects of daily living

Why Choose Donaldson’s?

Giving your child a Donaldson’s education has numerous benefits for both the child and the parents.  Here’s how we differ from mainstream schools:

  • Donaldson's offers a bilingual environment recognising British Sign Language (BSL) and English equally.
  • We have a range of specialist resources and facilities which are specifically designed to ensure a very high quality of education, therapy and care is delivered to each pupil.  For more information on Donaldson's campus please visit Our Campus page.
  • Learning and teaching is supported by our in-house interdisciplinary team which includes an Educational Psychologist; Educational Audiologist; Teachers of the Deaf; Speech and Language Therapists; an Occupational Therapist; a Physiotherapist; subject teachers; nursery nurses and classroom assistants. Visit our Educational Specialists section for more information.
  • Donaldson’s has a dedicated Deaf Studies department which teaches British Sign Language, and provides our pupils with an insight into Deaf history and culture. Our deaf colleagues also provide positive role models and mentors for pupils of all ages
  • Our residential team includes Social Workers and residential care staff (see School Life for further information).
  • Donaldson's believes in early intervention and provides both a nursery and a toddlers’ playgroup ensuring that your child has the very best start in education
  • We provide a signing peer group for the children and young people to help them develop their social skills
  • We recognise the importance of working in partnership with parents
